Energy supplier to go green

One of the UK's biggest gas and electricity suppliers has announced plans to improve its energy efficiency.

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has set itself a target to reduce its carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2019, which would equal a reduction of approximately 12 million tonnes.

The provider's previous target was to lower its carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2015 and Ian Marchant, the chief executive of SSE, said the new plans were "a stretching target".

"It could be affected by a variety of circumstances outside our control, such as the weather and movements in fuel prices, but it is the right response to a world which will become increasingly carbon-constrained," he explained.

"With a £3 billion programme of investment in renewables, we're putting our money where our mouth is."

Over the 12 months up to March 31st, SSE gained around 700,000 energy supply customers.

In its preliminary results for the year, the company also announced that its group adjusted profit before tax rose by 13.9 per cent over the time period.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18616356-ADNFCR
